"Specimens of United States Fractional Currency" specimen book. 1866. |
Description |
"Specimens of United States Fractional Currency," 1866. Thirteen of these books were presented in May of 1866 to President Andrew Johnson, his cabinet and several congressmen. Twelve presentation books have been traced to this date, and approximately sixteen originally existed. Three are in museums at the ANA, the ANS and the Smithsonian. All books contain the same 31 proof notes sharper in color and quality than normal specimen notes. Like all examples, this book contains notes of First, Second, and Third Issue fractional currency. The notes are mounted on heavy cardboard pages by embossing the notes into the pages. Thin blank tissue paper sheets separate these cardboard pages. The book has an ornate leather cover embossed in gold, and is approximately 6 3/8 inches wide and 4 ¾ inches long. Some specimens (not this one) have the recipient's name and title on the front cover. On the spine of the book reads the inscription "Specimens Of United States Fractional Currency" embossed in gold. |
